Baku – APA. Singapore on Monday upheld the death sentence for a young Malaysian convicted of drug trafficking, APA reports quoting “The Voice of America”.
The three-judge court of appeal dismissed Yong Vui Kong’s request for clemency as “without merit.”
Yong was convicted in 2008, when he was 19, of smuggling heroin into the city state.
Drug trafficking carries a mandatory death penalty in Singapore.
Yong’s lawyer said he would ask Singapore’s president S. R. Nathan for clemency in the case. A previous such appeal failed.
