Baku – APA. Taiwan on Friday executed five prisoners, less than a year after it carried out four death sentences following a more than four-year hiatus, the justice ministry said, APA reports quoting AFP.
"The five men committed grave offences that deprived the victims of their lives... their executions have been carried out," the ministry said in a statement.
One of the five had been convicted of killing five people while another was sentenced for setting fire to a cram school, killing three and injuring 18, according to the ministry.
The statement did not describe how the four were executed. Usually convicts in Taiwan are put to death with a bullet to the head.
Justice Minister Tseng Yung-fu last year approved four executions, just weeks after his predecessor stepped down, having caused a political storm by saying she would not allow any convict to be put to death during her tenure.
A total of 40 people are currently on death row after the latest executions, a media report said.
Taiwan reserves the death penalty for serious crimes including aggravated murder, kidnapping and robbery, but the political elite is divided about whether to maintain it.
Meanwhile, opinion polls suggest widespread backing on the island for capital punishment with no significant erosion of support over the years.
