Baku-APA. One policeman was killed and three were wounded in an attack by communist rebels in the eastern Philippines, a military spokesman said Sunday, APA reports quoting monstersandcritics.com web-page.
Police were escorting a convoy of Mayor Rolando Evardone of Arteche town in Eastern Samar province, 555 kilometres south-east of Manila, when they were ambushed Saturday.
Major Chris Tampos, a regional military spokesman, said Evardone was unharmed in the attack that also left one civilian wounded.
Tampos said the rebels detonated a mine on the roadside as the convoy passed by, killing one officer and wounding three others.
The guerrillas seized eight firearms from the 12 police officers escorting the mayor.
Peace talks between the government and communist rebels resumed last week in Oslo, Norway after being stalled since 2004. The two sides agreed to complete negotiations in 18 months.
Communist rebels have been fighting the government since the late 1960s, making the movement one of the longest-running leftist insurgencies in Asia.
