Iran ready to send aid to Libyan people
“Now that the rising wave of Islamic awakening has swept across Libya, vigilance and unity among all people for the complete realization of all demands and national objectives is more necessary than ever,†Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said on Saturday.
Mehmanparast added that the Organization of Islamic Conference member states and also regional countries should watch out for every pretext to launch an attack against the Libyan territory, resources and Muslim people.
Pro-democracy demonstrations inspired by the popular revolutions that deposed decades-long rulers in neighboring Egypt and Tunisia have engulfed Libya since February 15.
At least 1,000 people have been killed in Tripoli, partly in airstrikes conducted by the Libyan military in a desperate move to quell the popular uprising, according to some reports.
The International Federation for Human Rights says as many as 400 others have also been killed since the onset of protests in the North African country.
Meanwhile, a total of 130 Libyan soldiers have been reportedly executed for refusing to open fire on protesters.
The Islamic Republic of Iran would also make every effort to determine the fate of the missing Lebanese Shia leader Imam Moussa al-Sadr, Mehmanparast concluded.
Imam Moussa al-Sadr went missing during an official visit to Tripoli to meet with officials from the government of Gaddafi in August 1978.
It is widely believed in Lebanon that al-Sadr, the founder of Lebanon’s Amal movement, was kidnapped by the order of senior Libyan officials.
Accompanied by two of his companions, Mohammed Yaqoub and Abbas Badreddin, Sadr was scheduled to meet with Libyan officials.
In 2008, the Beirut government issued an arrest warrant for Gaddafi over Sadr’s disappearance.
