Baku – APA. Thousands of protesters have rallied in Jordan’s capital, where they called for government reforms and parliamentary elections, APA reports quoting “The Voice of America”.

Demonstrators have been holding Friday rallies in Jordan for weeks. News organizations say at least five thousand people turned out for the latest protest — one of the largest ones to date.

A VOA correspondent in Amman says protesters chanted “the people demand an elected government.” She says the demonstrators were surrounded by thousands of police officers who handed out juice boxes and bottled water.

The protesters denounced the country’s current and recently fired prime ministers, both of whom were named by King Abdullah. They also voiced their objections to high food prices, high taxes and nepotism. The protest participants included political opposition groups and youth groups.
