Yemen’s President Refuses to Step Down

Baku – APA-Economics. Yemen’s president refused to step down on Monday, calling the country’s opposition movement "unacceptable" and urging protesters to voice their discontent elsewhere, reports AP.

"The opposition has raised the ceiling of demands calling now for the regime’s down fall. This is unacceptable and those who want power should resort to the polling boxes," he said at a news conference. The U.S.-backed President also said he had called on security forces to hold their fire (except in "self defense") after at least 11 people died during the uprising that began earlier this month. Meanwhile, hundreds of protesters camped out in the capital Sanaa, and gave no indication that they were ready to give up.

An opposition spokesman called Saleh’s statement "merely an attempt to win time," adding, "we have been in this vicious circle for years." A standoff also continues in Bahrain, where protesters have demanded the dissolution of the government before agreeing to any talks, reports the New York Times. Thousands filled the capital’s Pearl Square on Sunday evening, asking the king to fire his uncle, who has acted as prime minister for four decades. They also demanded the king facilitate an interim government leading to a democracy. Crown prince Sheik Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifa has tried to make nice, but protesters are having none of it. "You can’t send your troops with machine guns, kill people and then expect to start a dialogue," said one of the 18 party members to withdraw from Parliament after at least six protesters were killed in clashes with security forces.
