Baku-APA. The Yemeni Defense Ministry denied on Tuesday reports that a suspected U.S. drone crashed in south Yemen and al-Qaida group seized the debris of the plane, APA reports quoting news.xinhuanet.com website.

"Reports about a U.S. spy drone crashed in Lodar in southern province of Abyan and the elements of al-Qaida wing seized the drone’s wreckages were baseless rumors," the ministry said in a statement posted on its website.

Ahmed al-Ghufaish, local director of Lodar, told Xinhua earlier Tuesday that residents of Lodar found burning wreckages believed to belong to a suspected "U.S. spy drone" crashed near the town.

"The burning wreckages, which could be remnants of a spy drone or a missile or a spy satellite, were found by the residents in Jehin area south of Lodar," he said, "I cannot say for sure that the debris are the remains of a spy unmanned plane until a special check process is finished."

Al-Ghufaish denied reports that some members of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) had seized the debris, confirming that the residents handed over all the wreckages to the security authorities in Lodar.

Abyan is believed to be one of al-Qaida’s strongholds, where a series of deadly battles between al-Qaida fighters and the security forces took place over the past months, leaving dozens of people dead or injured.
