Baku – APA. Afghan National Police and International Security Assistance Forces found and cleared a suicide vest in a mosque located in sub-district 9 of Kandahar City, yesterday, APA reports quoting official web-site of ISAF (International Security Assistance Force).
The Afghan National Police requested assistance from an ISAF explosive ordnance disposal team and escorted them to the device, which was hidden in the tower of the mosque.
The EOD team safely removed the vest from the tower. Further investigation of the vest revealed it was rigged with ball bearings, a grenade and nearly 20 pounds of explosives.
After the vest was removed from the tower, but before it could be properly destroyed, it detonated, causing external damage to the mosque and surrounding building.
No civilians were injured in the explosion.
“This demonstrates that the insurgents really do not care about the people of Afghanistan,†said U.S. Army Maj. Earl Brown, spokesman for 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. “This is just another example of their disregard for human life and their willingness to endanger innocent lives.â€
