In Indianapolis, Indiana, seven people were shot – including one who was critically injured – early Saturday morning, police said.
An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer heard multiple gunshots at around 2.30 a.m. Saturday in the city's Broad Ripple neighborhood, police spokesman Lieutenant Christopher Bailey said in a press release.
The victims were six men and one woman.
Meanwhile, at a music festival in Houston, Texas, six people were injured in a shooting.
Eyewitness accounts suggest a man opened fire just before 2 a.m. on Saturday morning inside an arena filled with around 5,000 fans attending the Houston Caribbean Festival, according to Houston police spokeswoman Jodi Silva.
Four men were shot, with one in critical condition, Silva said, adding that two women were hurt after people panicked and began to flee. The shooter is still on the run.
One witness, Deion Woodson, said, "It's usually a friendly Caribbean fest, everybody have fun, but this time one person started fighting and that's basically what happened and started shooting."
None of the 30 off-duty police officers who were working this event were inside the building at the time of the shooting, investigators said.
In Chicago, at least 21 people were shot overnight, bringing the total number of people shot in the city since the weekend began on Thursday afternoon to at least 36, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Chicago's Mayor Rahm Emanuel has called gun violence as the city's “most urgent problem.”
The US averages 87 gun deaths each day as a function of gun violence, with an average of 183 injuries.
