Clinton made the remarks on Monday as she called for a deeper investigation into the downing of a Malaysian passenger plane in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, which left all the 298 people on board dead.
The former US first lady said in a Facebook chat from the company's headquarters in Menlo Park, California, that tougher sanctions on Russia can send a more clear message to Russian President Vladimir Putin “that there is a price to pay for this kind of behavior,'' the Associated Press reported.
Clinton approved of President Barack Obama’s previous comments on Monday urging “immediate and full access'' for investigators combing through the wreckage of the downed plane and accusing Putin of backing Ukraine’s pro-Russian forces.
“If Russia continues to violate Ukraine’s sovereignty and to back these separatists,” President Obama said on Monday, then the country will “further isolate itself from the international community and the costs for Russia’s behavior will only continue to increase.”
“We should do more to ensure a thorough investigation that not only respects those who were murdered in the attack on the plane, but also tries to find answers to who is responsible,'' Clinton wrote during the question-and-answer session on the popular social media site.
On Friday, Obama said the plane was downed by pro-Russians in eastern Ukraine who used Russian-supplied weapons.
Russia has criticized the US for putting the blame on east Ukraine pro-Russian forces and Moscow without waiting for the results of an investigation.
Clinton also said the US should encourage Europeans to ensure that they are less dependent upon Russian energy. She also called for “more support given to the Ukrainians to guard their borders and protect themselves.''
