US President Donald Trump has begun acknowledging in private conversations that the war with Iran is negatively affecting the Republican Party's standing ahead of the congressional midterm elections, Washington Post (WP) said, citing four sources familiar with Trump's recent remarks, APA reports.
According to the newspaper, in recent weeks, Trump has begun taking the seriousness of the party's political situation more into account and paying closer attention to polls presented by his advisers. The president's advisers are also speaking increasingly openly with him about the political problems facing Republicans.
"Trump understands to some extent that some of his decisions have led to a decline in his popularity and that the situation regarding the midterm elections is not good," one source said. However, another WP source disagreed with the idea that Trump was taking responsibility, saying the president believes the main problem is that he himself is not on the ballot this year.
The newspaper noted that Trump is seeking to increase support for Republican candidates ahead of the November elections.
