Our goal is to establish a sustainable heart transplantation program in Azerbaijan, Honorary Chairman of the Society of Cardiovascular Surgery, Professor Kamran Musayev, said at a conference held as part of "Heart Transplantation Week," APA reports.
He stated that the development of healthcare in Azerbaijan is a direct result of the state healthcare policy established by National Leader Heydar Aliyev and successfully continued by President Ilham Aliyev. At the same time, thanks to the attention and care shown by First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva toward healthcare, Azerbaijan has emerged as a regional leader in one of the most complex fields of medicine and surgery, such as transplantation.
"Over the past year, we performed heart transplantation operations on four patients. Azerbaijan's journey in this field began in 1999. After 26–27 years of preparation, the process of organ transplantation from deceased donors was tested under real conditions for the first time last year, with a liver transplant in February, followed by a heart transplant in October. I believe that after the preparatory stage our country went through, we successfully passed this test last year.
I believe that those gathered here today, as well as dozens of our young colleagues and young Azerbaijanis who are not present, will turn this work into a sustainable tradition. Our goal was to establish a sustainable heart transplantation program in our country. To date, we have performed operations on four patients. The operations on all four patients were technically successful.
Therefore, I sincerely hope and believe that we will turn this into a tradition and that the sustainable heart transplantation program will continue to expand in our country," he said.
