U.S. citizen Mark Vogel, who was detained in Russia for drug smuggling, has been released and will soon return to his homeland. This was stated in a statement by the U.S. leader's national security adviser Mike Waltz, APA reports.
"Today, President Donald Trump and his special envoy [for the Middle East] Steve Witkoff may announce that Mr. Witkoff is leaving Russian airspace along with Mark Fogel, an American who was detained in Russia," Waltz said.
Vogel's release as part of the swap with Russia is a "gesture of goodwill" on the part of Moscow and indicates progress in resolving the Ukrainian crisis, Waltz said in a statement.
"President [of the United States Donald] Trump, [US President's special envoy for the Middle East] Steven Witkoff and the President's advisers negotiated a swap that is a gesture of goodwill on the part of the Russians and a sign that we are moving in the right direction to end the brutal and horrific war in Ukraine," the document says.
