The United States did not support Pope Francis' call for a truce in all conflicts over the Christmas period, said Matthew Miller, head of the press service of the State Department, answering a question about joining the pontiff's initiative, APA reports citing Pravda.

"There are a number of conflicts in which we are trying to achieve a ceasefire. Of course, this is the conflict in Gaza, the conflict in Sudan. But if you look, for example, at the confrontation between Russia and Ukraine, then ultimately this decision should be made by Ukraine," Miller told reporters.

He also noted that the United States wants a speedy settlement of the conflicts, but this does not mean an immediate ceasefire.

Earlier, on December 5, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, during a visit to Pope Francis at the Vatican, said that Hungary and the Vatican should keep world leaders from irreversible solutions to the Ukrainian conflict.
