Three people have been detained in connection with incidents that occurred during a protest outside the Constitutional Tribunal building in Warsaw, the capital of Poland, Goniec reports.
According to Polish police, tensions arose outside the court building, and protesters threw various objects at law enforcement officers. Police continued taking measures to restore order at the scene.
Law enforcement authorities detained three people on suspicion of illegally entering the court premises.
Note that the incident occurred amid a dispute over the leadership of the Constitutional Tribunal. Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska suspended the powers of Tribunal President Bogdan Święczkowski and his deputy Bartłomiej Sochański for one month and assumed leadership of the institution. She justified the decision by citing the refusal to allow four judges elected by parliament to attend the general assembly. Święczkowski and Sochański, however, dispute the legality of the decision.
The conflict is part of disagreements between the government led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Karol Nawrocki and the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party over the rule of law and the management of the Constitutional Tribunal in the country.
Amid the developments, President Nawrocki cut short his visit to Senegal and returned to Warsaw. The head of government, meanwhile, stated that the process of restoring the rule of law is difficult and sometimes painful.
