A defeat for the Republican Party in the US congressional midterm elections could prompt President Donald Trump to resume large-scale military operations against Iran, Axios reports, citing a source in the administration.
According to the report, there are disagreements within the US administration over renewed strikes against Iran. While Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth support the resumption of military operations, Vice President JD Vance, as well as Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, favor restarting negotiations with Tehran.
One source in the administration said that if the Republicans lose the midterm elections, Trump could be more inclined to order the launch of large-scale military operations. A White House representative, however, said that the election results would not affect Trump's decision regarding Iran.
According to Axios, Qatari representatives have made progress in Tehran toward resuming direct talks between US and Iranian representatives. These contacts are scheduled to continue in Doha on October 31.
Note that the US congressional midterm elections will be held on November 3.
