President-elect Donald Trump has now been sworn in as the 47th US president, APA reports citing CNN.

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States,” Trump said in his oath.

The Presidential Oath of Office is specified in Article II, Section 1 of the US Constitution. The oath for other federal officials, including the vice president, is not in the Constitution. Congress created those oaths by statute.

The words “so help me God” do not appear in the Constitutional oath. That phrase was supposedly ad-libbed by George Washington at his first inauguration, thus setting a precedent for future president. However, there is no concrete historical evidence that Washington actually did so.

Franklin Pierce and Herbert Hoover chose to “affirm” rather than “swear” their oaths.
