Baku-APA. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has decided to designate Spanish tenor and conductor Placido Domingo as its Goodwill Ambassador for Peace and Reconciliation, APA reports.

Placido Domingo's appointment came in recognition for his "exceptional artistic career, his inestimable support for young opera musicians through the Operalia competition, and his dedication to the values and ideals of UNESCO."

"I would like that one of my mission as ambassador will be to start with the idea that children all over the world know what music it is and that they have to learn classic music," Domingo said after the nomination ceremony held here late on Wednesday.

Born in 1941 in Madrid to parents who were zarzuela performers, Domingo studied piano, conducting and later opera at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City. In 1957, the Spanish tenor made his first professional appearance, along with his mother.

The awarded tenor has more than 100 recordings of complete operas, compilations of arias and duets. He enjoys an endless list of awards including a Honorary Knighthood from Britain's Queen Elizabeth II. Last week, he was honored with the prestigious ring of honor by the Vienna Opera.

UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors are an outstanding group of personalities who have generously agreed to use their talent and status to help focus the world's attention on the work of the Organization in education, science, culture and communication.
