Baku-APA. NATO approved on Thursday the nomination of U.S. Air Force General Philip Breedlove to the alliance's top military position, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Breedlove, the top U.S. Air Force commander in Europe, is expected to succeed Admiral James Stavridis as NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe in spring this year, according to a NATO statement.

The United States initially nominated General John Allen, who led NATO forces in Afghanistan, to the job. But his nomination had been placed on hold amid a Pentagon investigation into his emails exchanges with a woman related to former CIA Director David Petraeus' extramarital affair until Allen was cleared of misconduct. Allen announced his retirement last month.
