Fighting must stop in Ukraine, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said this at the 11th extraordinary special session of the UN General Assembly, APA reports.
He said that the fighting continues throughout Ukraine - in the air, on land, and at sea. "Russian missiles and bombs are hitting Ukrainian cities day and night. The capital Kyiv is surrounded on all sides. As a result of the ongoing attacks, 3 million residents of Kyiv have been forced to search for security in their homes, shelters and metro stations. The Ukrainian government has distributed a significant amount of weapons to the population in order to participate in the defense of the country. According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, half a million Ukrainians have left the country.
The Secretary-General noted that despite reports that Russia was targeting mainly military facilities in Ukraine, there were credible reports that residential buildings, critical civilian infrastructure and non-military targets were severely damaged.
"The escalation of this violence, which has resulted in the deaths of civilians, including children, is completely unacceptable." Guterres stressed.
