The United States continues to believe that Sweden can become a member of the North Atlantic Alliance, despite the scandal with Turkiye, said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, APA reports.
“We continue to expect NATO to accept Sweden and Finland,” she said.
She also stated that Finland and Sweden have taken steps to implement the tripartite agreement with Turkiye.
U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price earlier expressed confidence that the anti-Turkish provocation in Sweden was deliberate and aimed at hindering NATO expansion.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan noted that Sweden should not wait for favors from Turkiye on the issue of NATO membership after the actions of supporters of terrorism and enemies of Muslims that took place in Stockholm.
