Former United States President Jimmy Carter will begin receiving hospice care instead of standard medical treatments, The Carter Center announced on Saturday, APA reports citing Teletrader.

"After a series of short hospital stays, former US President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention. He has the full support of his family and his medical team," the center's statement read.

Carter, 98, served as the country's 39th president, from 1977 to 1981. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for "his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts" through The Carter Center. In the past few years, he underwent several medical treatments and survived cancer in 2015.
