Evacuations announced for coastal areas of Japan and Hawaii due to strong earthquake in Pacific Ocean

A tsunami warning is in effect for residents of the Hawaiian Islands due to a powerful earthquake in the Pacific Ocean, US President Donald Trump said, APA reports.

Trump noted that a tsunami warning is also in effect for Alaska and the Pacific coast of the United States, and emphasized that Japan is also in danger.

The US Tsunami Warning Center warned that tsunami waves over 3 meters high due to a powerful earthquake in the Pacific Ocean could even reach the coasts of South America, Ecuador and Chile.

It is noted that the competent authorities in Japan and Hawaii have announced the need for urgent evacuation of people from coastal regions to higher ground.

In particular, the personnel of the Japanese Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, which was seriously damaged during the devastating tsunami that occurred in March 2011, were evacuated.

It should be noted that a powerful 8.7-magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Kamchatka, Russia.
