Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will pay a working visit to Cyprus on October 29–30, Philenews reports.
According to the publication's analysis, Abbas's visit to Cyprus is significant in terms of diplomatic relations. During the visit, the Palestinian leader will meet with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides.
The publication notes that the regional dimension of the visit is directed toward Türkiye and the broader Arab world. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's visit to Cyprus is seen as a message both to countries in the region, particularly Türkiye, and to the opposition in Cyprus, which has voiced criticism of the country's authorities.
The domestic political aspect of the visit is related to responding to criticism from Cyprus's left-wing opposition. The opposition accuses the Christodoulides government of pursuing a policy of one-sided support for Israel and failing to adequately take into account the interests of Palestinians.
According to the publication, the Cypriot government aims to demonstrate through this visit that it is capable of maintaining dialogue with various parties in the region.
According to a statement by Cypriot government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis, the talks between the two presidents will focus on bilateral relations, the situation in the region, European Union-Palestine relations, and the Cyprus problem.
The agenda of the meeting also includes Cyprus's role in delivering humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and the aid initiative carried out through the Amalthea maritime corridor.
Note that this is Abbas's third visit to Cyprus since Christodoulides assumed the presidency. The two leaders last met in May 2025.
