The text of Armenia's Declaration of Independence is anti-statehood, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said during a briefing with journalists, Armenpress reports.

"The existence of an independent state is impossible with this text. This text speaks about the impossibility of the state's existence," the Prime Minister stated.

Pashinyan noted that the adoption of a new constitution was included in the election program of the ruling Civil Contract party. He emphasized that after winning an absolute majority in the elections, the party must implement its program.

According to the Prime Minister, the opposition has linked the constitutional process to the international and regional agenda. He noted the possibility of increasing public pressure to prevent the opposition from obstructing a referendum on the new constitution.

Pashinyan said he could make a proposal to the opposition that would be difficult for them to reject. In his opinion, there is a high probability that the process will not lead to early elections.

Note that Armenia's Declaration of Independence contains territorial claims against Azerbaijan. The Declaration of Independence, which is referenced in the preamble to the Constitution, contains a provision on the necessity of uniting the former Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia. Azerbaijan opposes this and has put forward amendments to Armenia's Constitution as a condition for signing a peace agreement with Armenia.
