US President Donald Trump told his aides that he wants to hold a phone conversation with his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolás Maduro, APA reports quoting Axios.
"President Trump told his advisers that he plans to speak directly with Nicolás Maduro," the outlet reports. The outlet's sources noted that the call is still being worked out, so a precise date for the conversation has not been set. Trump's inner circle doesn't know what exactly he wants to tell Maduro, so "all options remain on the table."
As Axios sources noted, the American leader's desire to hold this conversation could be a sign that missile strikes on Venezuela or ground military operations on its territory are not inevitable.
A White House source assured the portal that the US administration is not currently planning any direct operations against the Venezuelan president. "No one is planning to come and shoot him or kidnap him. I'm not saying it will never happen, but it's not on the agenda right now," the source told Axios. "We have covert operations, but they're not aimed at killing Maduro. They're aimed at stopping drug trafficking," the White House spokesman told the portal.
