Baku-APA. Russia and the European Union (EU) call for neutral and non-political humanitarian aid to the Syrian people, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

During a meeting between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov and visiting European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva, the two sides acknowledged the importance of providing "neutral and non-political humanitarian assistance to the Syrian population," said the ministry in a statement.

Humanitarian aid to the Syrian people should follow " fundamental humanitarian principles" and "take into full consideration" the coordinating role of the UN, the statement added.

At their meeting, Gatilov informed Georgieva of Russia’s humanitarian assistance to Syria via bilateral channels, as well as its financial support for the work of UN agencies and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the conflict- torn Middle East country.

Georgieva praised Russia’s efforts to help improve the humanitarian situation in Syria and relieve the Syrian people’s misery, according to the statement.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said last week that the humanitarian situation in Syria was deteriorating due to sanctions against Damascus.

Earlier, the World Health Organization, the UN Children’s Fund and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs notified Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov of the dire humanitarian situation in Syria, highlighting the growing number of civilian casualties, displaced persons and refugees.

Russia agreed with these assessments, and believed that the Syrian authorities were cooperating with the ICRC and also taking other measures to help the conflict-affected people, said the Russian Foreign Ministry.
