U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon hopes continuation of  Nagorno Karabkh problem’s settlement

Baku-APA. U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky expressed Ban-ki Ban’s concern Thursday at developments following Lt. Ramil Safarov’s transfer from Hungary last month. Safarov confessed to killing Lt. Gurgen Markarian provoked Azerbaijani officer while both were in Hungary for a 2004 NATO language course, APA reports.

"We hope that this issue will not harm the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process and the trust between the parties," - said in a briefing Nesirky. In his words, "the alternative to a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict does not exist."

Nesirky said Ban emphasizes that all U.N. members have a responsibility "to adhere to international standards and principles of rule of law in criminal cases in order to ensure accountability and fight impunity."
