Haiti death toll from storm Isaac hits 13: UN

Baku-APA. The death toll from tropical storm Isaac has reached 13 in Haiti after the storm tore over the small Caribbean island country early Friday, a UN spokesman told reporters here Monday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

"The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs ( OCHA) says the number of deaths in Haiti caused by tropical storm Isaac stands at 13 with 27 people injured," UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said at a daily news briefing here.

Another 15,000 Haitian people were evacuated and 335 homes destroyed in the wake of the tropical storm, reports said on Monday.

"The situation in Haiti in the aftermath of the storm, which hit the country early on Friday morning, is gradually normalizing, but there is still a risk of floods and landslides," Nesirky said.

"People in temporary evacuation shelters have started returning home, and distribution of food and household items has also started," he said.

In the longer term, concerns remain over food security associated with crop losses due to the recent drought and now tropical storm Isaac, the spokesman said.
