Baku-APA. The Dominican Republic’s newly-sworn in President Danilo Medina on Thursday said his government would strive to fight crime by adopting measures including improving the national police forces, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Medina, who won presidential elections on May 20 with 51.21 percent of the votes, formally became president of Dominican Republic on Thursday, replacing his predecessor Leonel Fernandez. Medina’s term will be four years.

While addressing a ceremony to mark the occasion Thursday, Medina, 60, spelled out several steps he would take to help make the country a safer place, including reforming the police force, and improving officers’ salaries and social security services.

Medina said he didn’t want Dominicans "to be afraid of going out into the streets, of youngsters being killed, ... because of violence."

Medina said they would rely on development of tourism industry, agriculture, as well as small and medium-size businesses to achieve new economic success in his island nation. He also promised to lift 1.6 million Dominicans out of poverty and distribute wealth more fairly among the country’s 9.3 million residents during his tenure.
