Baku-APA. U.S. President Barack Obama spoke with Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy over the phone earlier Monday and pledged support for Spain’s efforts to get its economy back on track, the White House said, APA reports citing Xinhua.

"President Obama acknowledged the difficult challenges that the Spanish people are facing, and reiterated his support" for the efforts to get Spain’s economy back on track, the White House said in a short statement.

The telephone conversation is part of Obama’s ongoing discussions with European leaders about the eurozone economy, according to the statement.

The Obama administration has been in close consultation with European leaders in recent months as the simmering debt crisis has become a primary concern for the global economic prospects.

As its latest move to rebalance strained public finances and a step toward meeting the European Union’s limit on deficit-to-GDP ratio, the Spanish government Friday announced a new belt- tightening plan that could save the country 102 billion euros ( about 126 billion U.S. dollars) by 2014.
