Baku-APA. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Monday strongly condemned Sunday’s terror attack on a border checkpoint in Egypt’s Sinai, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
"Such attacks are totally unacceptable," Ban said in a statement released here by his spokesperson.
According to the statement, the attack killed 16 Egyptian police officers and injured others as they were breaking the Ramadan fast, and was followed by the penetration of the border into Israel, putting Israeli citizens potentially at risk.
The UN chief hoped that the perpetrators will be swiftly identified and brought to justice.
Ban also expressed "his condolences to the families of the victims and wishes those injured a speedy recovery," said the statement.
