Suspect denies charges of murdering top Venezuelan envoy
Dwight Ashrubal Saragay denied the charges before High Court Justice Florence Muchemi in Nairobi that on July 26 he murdered Olga Fonseca Jimenez, who was Venezuelan’s acting ambassador to Kenya.
The suspect was however remanded to enable his defence team prepare the necessary documents to have him released on bail later this week.
The prosecutors have accused Saragay along with Muhammed Ahmed who is wanted by the Kenya police in connection with the case of murder involving the late Jimenez who was until her tragic death as the charge d’affairs of Venezuelan Embassy in Nairobi.
The police have called on members of the public to volunteer crucial information that may lead to the arrest of Mohamed who is a medical doctor.
"Any person with information on his whereabouts is requested to report to the nearest police station or police officer. We also wish to inform the public that a warrant of arrest was been issued by a court of law on July 31," police said in a statement last week.
Saragay, arrested on July 28 after the authorities waived his diplomatic immunity is also being treated as a key suspect in the murder of the 57-year-old Jimerez.
Two Kenyan private security guards who were guarding the deceased’s residence at the time of her death have also been charged for failing to stop the envoy’s killing. Bernard Owino and Eliud Kimutai are facing charges of failing to use any reasonable means to stop Jimerez’s murder. However, the two pleaded not guilty on July 30 and were released on 1,200 U.S. dollar cash bail.
Jimenez was appointed as acting ambassador after Silva who was implicated in a sexual harassment claims had left the East African nation two months ago.
The staff at the embassy had formally filed complaint with the police alleging sexual harassment by Silva, the allegations which forced him out of the country.
The employees were sacked mid July for reportedly refusing to retract their accusations of sexual impropriety against the ambassador.
Sources at the Venezuela’s embassy said the late diplomat was found tied with wires around her feet and neck, but refused to elaborate, saying the ongoing investigations would unravel more details.
