Baku-APA. The UN Security Council adopted a resolution Tuesday that extended the mandate of the joint UN-African Union peacekeeping force in Darfur, Sudan, known as UNAMID, for another year until July 31, 2013, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The resolution received 14 votes in favor, one vote abstaining from Azerbaijan, a non-permanent member of the Council.

After consultation with the African Union, the Council decided to reconfigure the personnel of UNAMID so that the mission shall consist of up to 16,200 military personnel, 2,310 police personnel and 17 formed police units of up to 140 personnel each.

The Council underlined that the priority of UNAMID is " protection of civilians across Darfur" and "ensuring safe, timely and unhindered humanitarian access" as well as "the safety and security of humanitarian personnel and humanitarian activities."

Established in 2007, UNAMID aims to support the peace process in Darfur as well as security and rule of law, and protect civilians living in the region.

The Council also urged the government of Sudan and the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM) to fully implement the Doha Document, the framework for the comprehensive peace process in Darfur, which was finalized in May 2011.

Fighting in Darfur between rebels and Sudan’s government has been going on since 2003.

The resolution demanded all parties to the conflict to make every effort to reach a permanent cease-fire and a comprehensive peace settlement on the basis of the Doha Document in order to bring a stable and durable peace to the region.
