Obama has done the most for Israeli security: Barak
Obama is "the most supportive" out of all the American presidents he has known, Ehud Barak said, during a CNN interview airing late Monday night.
"I’ve seen many different administrations on both sides of the political aisle and I honestly feel that this administration has done more in regards to Israel’s security than anything I can remember in the past," he told Wolf Blitzer.
The endorsement comes just two days after Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s visit to Israel.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Romney met twice on Sunday and, according to reports, held warm meetings.
However, Barak, who served as prime minister between 1999 and 2002, from the left-of-center Labor Party, did not meet with the Republican presidential candidate.
"There is one president at any given time in the U.S., like there’s one government here," Barak told Israel Radio, possibly alluding to a reason why he didn’t meet with the candidate, who holds no official government role.
Romney’s visit aimed at showing his commitment to Israel, in an attempt to attract the votes of wavering American Jews, and boost already strong support among pro-Israel conservatives.
Romney tried to paint himself as the "opposite of Obama" as far as Mideast policy is concerned, as both he and Netanyahu criticized the U.S.-led United Nations Security Council sanctions on Iran.
Netanyahu on Sunday told Romney the sanctions hadn’t set back the Iranian nuclear program "by an iota."
Romney angered both the White House and Palestinians during his visit, when he called Jerusalem Israel’s capital.
Despite Romney’s attacks on Obama’s stance towards Israel, several weekend reports spoiled his agenda.
On Friday, Obama signed a law reinforcing security and military cooperation between the U.S. and Israel, including 70 million dollars in funding for the Iron Dome anti-missile system.
Also, on Sunday the Ha’aretz daily said that U.S. National Security Adviser Tom Donilon briefed Netanyahu on Washington’s contingency plans for a pre-emptive strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
However, government sources denied the report, including the presumed briefing.
