Baku-APA. Nicaragua’s designated flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the 30th Olympic Games, medal winner Michelle Richardson arrived in London Wednesday, Nicaraguan Olympic Committee (CON) spokesman Moises Avalos said, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The Nicaraguan-born Richardson’s story is an unusual one, since she garnered a silver medal in swimming at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, but not for her country.

Nicaragua would not let her compete as a Nicaraguan, because Richardson lived in the United States at the time, and relations between the two were at an all-time low. Then 15 years old, Richardson joined the U.S. athletic delegation.

Now Richardson is set to carry the flag ahead of Nicaragua’s 12-member delegation, led by delegation chief Juan Estrada.

The committee said Nicaraguan athletes competing at the Games included track-and-field stars Ingrid Narvaez and Edgard Cortes, swimmers Dalia Torres and Omar Nunez, boxer Osmar Bravo, weightlifterLucia Castaneda. The remaining members are the respective trainers.

Avalos said the athletes would be dressed to the nines at the ceremony, saying "for the first time in history, Nicaragua will parade in formal wear at the Olympic Games, because the delegation was presented with black blazers, dark ties, white shirts, and gray slacks and shoes."
