US senator stresses importance of stability in Lebanon

Baku-APA. Visiting U.S. Senator John McCain, a high ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, stressed Friday the importance of stability in Lebanon and prevent the spill of the Syrian crisis into Lebanon, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

According to a statement issued by the U.S. embassy in Lebanon, McCain who met with President Michel Suleiman hailed "the policy of the Lebanese government of distancing the country from the regional developments and no interfere in the internal affairs of the neighboring countries."

The statement added that the U.S. senator discussed with the Lebanese president the bilateral relations and the aid provided by the U.S. to Lebanon particularly the military aid to the Lebanese army to enforce its role in preserving the civil peace and protecting the border.

McCain, who visited Lebanon on July 5 and 6 as part of a tour of the Middle East and Afghanistan, met also with a broad spectrum of individuals in Lebanon, and with them, discussed relevant local and regional issues.

Senator McCain met with Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces General Jean Kahwagi and chief of Lebanese Forces Party Dr. Samir Geagea on Thursday, and held meetings with former Prime Minister Fouad Seniora, and Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt on Friday.

Senator McCain last visited Lebanon in February 2011.
