Baku-APA. U.S. Republican Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney was on Tuesday night projected to win his party’s presidential primaries in the state of Maryland and the District of Columbia, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
The projections were based on exit polls. CNN projected Romney winning in Maryland, while NBC projected him to win in both Maryland and D.C., beating main rival Rick Santorum.
The win is likely to solidify Romney’s frontrunner status, but Santorum has refused to back down even as many in the party began calling on him to quit.
Except Maryland and D.C., Wisconsin is also holding a primary on Tuesday, and polls are still open in that state.
Romney projected to win GOP primaries in Maryland, D.C.
