Three people were killed and over 600 injured in downtown Cairo as clashes between supporters of embattled Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and opposition protesters continued.
The violence took place at the Egyptian capital’s Tahrir Square, the main focus of the protests against Mubarak.
The current situation remains tense in the collision zone. Unidentified throw petrol bombs from the balconies of nearby buildings. Omar Suleiman earlier urged demonstrators to obey the requirements of the military and quickly return their homes.

US Secretary of State once again emphasized the condemnation of violence, and strongly encouraged the government to investigate and hold those responsible for the violence accountable. “Now, we don’t know who unleashed these thugs on the streets of Cairo. They’ve been identified as supporters of the government. But whoever they are, they need – there needs to be accountability here”, - US State Department Spokesman Philip J. Crowley said.
