Baku-APA. Peruvian officials have announced that Native American rights activist Lori Berenson will be released on Monday after serving a 15-year prison term, APA reports quoting Press TV.

The 40-year-old US citizen was paroled in May but she was reincarcerated in August and went back to prison with her 18-month-old son.

On Friday, the same judge who had paroled her reinstated it, AP reported.

However, Berenson cannot leave Peru until the 20-year term ends. The restriction can be abolished only if the Peruvian president commutes the sentence.

Berenson has participated in research and investigation work on South American cultures.

On November 30, 1995 she was arrested in Lima on charges of being a member of an insurgent organization, the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement.

She was sentenced to life for "treason against the fatherland," but four and a half years later, under international pressure, the sentence was commuted to 20 years.
