Baku-APA. A cave-in at a Chilean copper mine has trapped 34 workers nearly 1,000 feet (300 meters) below ground, APA reports quoting news.yahoo.com website.

Rescuers scrambling to reach the miners have been forced to halt their efforts while they wait for specialized equipment to arrive.

Ximena Matas is governor of the northern region of Copiapo, where the San Jose mine is located.

She told state television Friday that the miners may have managed to reach an underground shelter that contains oxygen, food and other supplies.

In 2007, an explosion at the San Jose mine killed three workers.

It is owned by private mining company San Esteban.
