Baku – APA. A Brazilian military helicopter has departed on a humanitarian mission to pick up a Colombian soldier expected to be freed by leftist rebels after more than 12 years in captivity, APA reports quoting “Associated Press”.
Sgt. Pablo Emilio Moncayo is one of the longest-held hostages of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC. He was 19 when taken hostage during a raid on Dec. 21, 1997.
His father gained fame for walking halfway across Colombia in 2007 to press for his release.
A team led by Colombian Sen. Piedad Cordoba and also including International Red Cross officials departed on the Brazilian military helicopter Tuesday from the city of Florencia. They planned to pick up Moncayo from rebels at an unannounced location in southern Colombia.
