Civil society plays the role of a key bridge in decision-making, Maimunah Mohd Sharif, Advisor on Sustainable Urbanization to the Government of Malaysia, said at the opening ceremony of the “WUF13 NGO Forum,” held for the first time in WUF history at Azerbaijan’s initiative, APA reports.

She stated that in the modern era, how decisions are made directly depends on mechanisms of cooperation and partnership: “We are facing not just a slogan here, but a test of leadership.”

The advisor emphasized that against the backdrop of the rapid growth of cities, problems such as housing, inequality and climate resilience are no longer abstract, but directly affect people’s daily lives.

She noted that non-governmental organizations and civil society are not only participants in this process, but also the main coordinating force between people, policy and practical solutions: “You are not just participants, you are the main bridge connecting people, policy and practice.”

According to Maimunah Mohd Sharif, real experiences show that urban transformation is possible not only through institutions, but through the coming together of different stakeholders: “In this regard, NGOs create opportunities for closeness to society, trust and a deeper understanding of the real situation. Civil society plays the role of the main connecting force uniting governments, international organizations, the private sector and local communities, and increases the effectiveness of global partnership.”
