The holding of the World Urban Forum in Azerbaijan once again demonstrated that our country approaches these issues with extreme sensitivity, Hijran Huseynova, Chairperson of the Family, Women and Children Affairs Committee of the Milli Majlis, said at the event titled “Early Warnings and Sustainable Cities” held within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, APA reports.

She stated that the issue is not only about voicing a problem and bringing it to public attention: “The main goal is to find solutions to these problems. I believe that the discussions held within the framework of the forum, the projects and proposals presented, and the documents to be adopted will make an important contribution to the formation of the sustainable city model of the future. As President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev noted, Baku has already become one of the main platforms of the global urbanization and climate agenda. The broad and comprehensive speech delivered at the opening of the forum yesterday once again demonstrated this. I would say that this speech is a roadmap not only for Azerbaijanis, but in general for people working in this field. We must understand that the future of cities is no longer measured only by architectural projects, but also by a strong legal framework and effective implementation mechanisms. The Parliament of Azerbaijan also responds promptly to challenges related to climate change and sustainable urban development. The legislative framework is being improved, and public discussions are being held with parliamentary committees, state bodies and civil society representatives. At the same time, awareness-raising activities carried out in the country serve to strengthen both the legal and social aspects of sustainable development.”

Hijran Huseynova noted that the expansion of early warning systems, the involvement of vulnerable groups in processes, increasing the activity of women and the protection of children are among the main priorities: “In this regard, the activities of First Vice-President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva, as well as Leyla Aliyeva, should be especially noted. They constantly pay attention to solving social and humanitarian problems and provide important support in this direction. The scientific model of a safe future is based on numerous components that ensure risk assessment and accurate forecasting. In this field, the application of multi-hazard early warning systems is extremely important. Because recently we have observed an increase in interconnected threats such as heat, drought, landslides and migration. These processes occur not only in Azerbaijan, but all over the world. Therefore, simultaneous analysis of events and the establishment of timely warning mechanisms are necessary. At the same time, the application of “smart city” technologies makes it possible to monitor the situation in real time and take measures hours before incidents occur.”
