Traditional energy sources must be combined with renewable energy sources, Rustam Gasimov, Deputy Chairman of Azerenergy OJSC, said during the event titled “Digital Management Architecture of Azerbaijan’s Energy System” held within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, APA-Economics reports.
He noted that this can only be managed through proper digital infrastructure and communication platforms:
“One of the most advanced SCADA system models currently existing in the world is already in use by Azerenergy. The system was recently updated. This is not only about managing and monitoring Azerbaijan’s electricity grid. The system also consists of 18 different tools related to modeling and digital analysis of the energy grid. WAMS (Wide Area Monitoring and Recording System), which is a completely new technology for us, is also being implemented. This system was mainly designed to make renewable energy sources more manageable. The monitoring system has already been delivered and is operational. The large-scale management system is currently at the commissioning stage.”
He stated that one of the most important and difficult issues for any energy grid with a large number of renewable energy sources is weather forecasting:
“Currently, Azerenergy is creating its own solar and wind energy forecasting system. This system will allow dispatchers to predict in advance the volume of energy that will come from renewable energy sources.
Such a combined energy grid requires a proper monitoring and analysis center. At present, there are approximately 32 software packages supporting us in monitoring, analyzing, collecting, and processing data related to the energy system.
The purpose of all this is to maintain sustainable energy supply. Our next main goal is to integrate all these software systems and monitoring devices into a single platform.”
