Extreme weather events such as floods, flash floods, and heavy rainfall are occurring more frequently and becoming more severe each year, Deputy Chairman of the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency (ADSEA) Khayyam Mammadov said during the event titled “Early Warnings and Sustainable Cities” held within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, APA reports.

He stated that these events damage infrastructure, affect the economy, and reduce people’s quality of life: “The water sector is one of the areas most affected by climate change. Like many countries, Azerbaijan is facing serious risks in this field. Therefore, adaptation is one of our main priorities. Previously, around 10–20 flood incidents occurred annually in Azerbaijan. Today, this figure has increased several times.”

Khayyam Mammadov noted that in order to increase climate resilience, the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency operates in line with the national water strategy and other state development programs: “Our activities support the UN Sustainable Development Goals related to clean water, climate action, and environmental protection. At the same time, these activities are aligned with the decisions adopted during COP29 hosted by Azerbaijan in 2024. We are also preparing new adaptation projects together with state institutions, international organizations, and private companies for COP31, which will be held in Antalya in 2026.”
