Aftershocks are being recorded after a 6-magnitude earthquake in Azerbaijan on November 15, Gurban Yetirmishli, head of the Republican Seismic Survey Center of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), told APA.

A 6 magnitude earthquake hit Aghdam district on November 15 at 11.48 p.m. (GMT +4). The earthquake occurred at a depth of 25 km.

According to Yetirmishli, after the earthquake, the process of energy release is underway in the area, so aftershocks are normal.

“Over 30 aftershocks were recorded in the epicenter. After the strong earthquake, a 3-magnitude earthquake occurred at night. Other tremors were weak. The energy release process will continue until the epicenter returns to its previous calm state. However, there is no threat of a repeated strong earthquake in this territory,” he said.

“Our seismic station in Aghdam district is located in the epicenter, and there weren't even ordinary cracks on it. There are weak constructions in villages of the district, and cracks may appear there, even walls may be destroyed,” said Yetirmishli.

He added that the earthquake didn't cause any heavy damage.

Asked about a possible impact of the recent strong earthquake in western Iran on Azerbaijan, he said.  “Yesterday’s earthquake in Azerbaijan had nothing to do with the recent strong earthquake in western Iran. From the point of view of the geological structure and tectonic faults, the earthquake in Iran was different.”
