The Rezo Gabriadze Puppet Theatre has presented the play "Alfred and Violetta" in Baku, APA reports.
The play, written and first staged by prominent Georgian theatre figure Rezo Gabriadze, has returned to the stage in a new production.
Before his death in 2021, the author revised the work, while his son, director Leo Gabriadze, completed the new stage version of the play.
Speaking to journalists, Leo Gabriadze said that the theatre had marked its 46th anniversary and that the company was pleased to visit Baku:
"It is a great joy for us to introduce our theatre to Baku audiences and showcase our work. The last time I was in Baku was in 1982. It was a completely different city back then. Baku has changed significantly and become even more beautiful. We received a very warm welcome. We are delighted to be in such a hospitable environment. I thank the festival for the invitation."
According to the director, the play was presented as the theatre's first stage production at its opening in 1981 and remained in the repertoire for several years. Approximately six or seven years ago, Rezo Gabriadze revised the play, changing the period in which the events take place from 1981 to 1991. Leo Gabriadze also emphasized that he left Georgia in 1990 and moved to the United States, which is why he feels a personal connection to the play's main character.
The world premiere of the revised production took place at Teatro Goldoni in Venice in February 2022. The stage production attracted the attention of audiences and theatre critics.
Writing about the production in 2022, the Italian publication La Nuova particularly highlighted Gabriadze's theatrical style, which combines humor with profound sadness, and the unique world he created through puppets that appear lifelike and emotionally expressive.
