The Center for Social Research (CSR) conducted a survey among citizens to determine the degree of public confidence that a peace treaty will be signed between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the near future and diplomatic relations will be established.
As the Center for Strategic Studies told APA, to the question “Do you believe that a peace treaty will be signed between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the near future and diplomatic relations will be established?” more than half (53.1%) of the survey participants answered that they believe in this or that degree (22.1% of respondents are absolutely sure of this, 31.0% of respondents mostly believe in this).
11.0% of respondents generally do not believe that a peace treaty will be signed and diplomatic relations will be established, and 33.1% of respondents said that they do not believe in this at all. 2.8% of respondents found it difficult to answer the question asked.
A comparison of the survey results with different periods in 2022 showed that there is no significant difference in the attitude of citizens towards the likelihood of signing a peace agreement in the near future.
According to the results of a survey conducted in September last year, 53.5% of respondents expressed some degree of confidence that a peace treaty would be signed between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the near future and diplomatic relations would be established (28.3% of respondents said that they are absolutely sure of this, and 25.2% of respondents said that they mostly believe in it). 6.2% of respondents said that they generally do not believe that a peace treaty will be signed between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the near future and diplomatic relations will be established, while 36.9% of respondents said that they do not believe in this at all.
This trend continued in the results of the December 2022 survey. 55.7% of respondents stated that they believe to one degree or another that a peace treaty will be signed between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the near future and diplomatic relations will be established. 11.0% of survey participants said they generally do not believe in signing a peace agreement, and 29.5% of respondents said they do not believe in signing it at all.
The consistent trend observed in the degree of confidence in signing a peace agreement in different periods may be due to the fact that, despite the principles of a peace agreement presented by Azerbaijan, Armenia is shying away from normalizing bilateral relations and signing a peace agreement. Despite meetings in various mediation formats held between the two countries, a peace agreement has not yet been signed.
Please note that data collection for the current survey was conducted from September 8 to September 11, 2023. The survey was conducted in the form of a telephone interview and involved 390 respondents over 18 years of age.
The survey was conducted in Baku, Absheron-Khizi, Upper-Shirvan, Ganja-Dashkesan, Gazakh-Tovuz, Lankaran-Astara, Guba-Khachmaz, Sheki-Zagatala, Garabagh, Central Aran, Mil-Mugan, Shirvan-Salyan economic regions with compliance with gender equality of respondents in proportion to population size. Considering the number of respondents covered by the survey, the margin of error in the results is 5% with a confidence interval of 95%.
