Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry announces results of next monitoring in the Kur and Araz Rivers

National Environmental Monitoring Department of the Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources conducted monitoring for the third ten-day of May to study the level of pollution of the Kur and Araz Rivers and their transboundary branches, the ministry’s press service told APA. Compared with the second ten-day of May, the flow rate in the Kur River in the third ten-day of May reduced by 59 cbm/sec and made up 476 cbm/sec.

The monitoring revealed that phenols and copper compounds exceed the maximum permissible concentration by times in the Kur River that underwent transboundary pollution in Georgia and Armenia.

Phenol pollution exceeds MPC by 3 times and copper compounds by 2 times in the Shikhli-2 area, phenols exceeded MPC by 2 times and copper compounds by 2 times in the Aghstafachay River, phenols exceeded MPC by 2 times and copper compounds by 3 times in the Aghstafachay Reservoir.

According to the monitoring, the flow rate in the Araz River, which borders on Armenia, made up 71.5 cbm/sec. Phenols and copper compounds exceeded MPC by 3 and 2 times respectively in Horadiz area of the River, copper compounds and phenols exceeded MPC by 3 and 2 times respectively in Shahseven I, copper compounds exceeded MPC by 3 and phenols by 2 times in Bahmantapa.

Oxygen concentrations in equilibrium with the air range from about 5.27 mg/liter to 5.93 mg/liter.
